FAQ

AI data deletion, answered straight.

The condensed version of every guide on this site. Start with the application guide if you're ready to file.

Can AI companies really delete what they know about me?

Stored chats, files, memory and account data: yes, fully. Future training: yes, via opt-outs. Already-trained model weights: no — no provider can surgically unlearn you; the accepted remedy is suppressing outputs about you plus deleting everything else.

How do I delete ChatGPT's memory of me?

Settings → Personalization → Memory → Manage (delete entries) or Clear ChatGPT's memory (wipe all), then toggle Memory and 'Reference chat history' off. Full walkthrough on our delete-memory page and at chatgptmemory.com.

How do I formally apply for deletion?

Use each provider's privacy portal — privacy.openai.com, privacy.anthropic.com, Google and Microsoft's privacy request forms, Meta's Data Subject Rights form — and paste a GDPR/CCPA template from our template page. GDPR answers are due within a month, CCPA within 45 days.

What happens to conversations already used for training?

Their patterns persist in the model; individual private chats almost never become retrievable facts, but they can't be extracted either. Demand three things: deletion of the source data, exclusion from future training, and output suppression.

Does deleting my account erase everything?

It removes your account data and conversations on the provider's deletion schedule (~30 days, legal holds aside). It does not reach trained weights (see above) or data others posted about you — those need the removal/suppression forms.

What about what AI infers — like my orientation or health — from what I ask?

Inferences are personal data too, and health/sexuality inferences are special-category data under GDPR Article 9 with extra protection. They live in transcripts and memory entries — both deletable. Our sensitive-inferences page covers this in depth.

Can my employer's or company's data be pulled back out?

Contain (employee deletes chats/memory, training off), formalize (corporate deletion request to the provider's DPO), prevent (business tier with DPA, or an administered workspace). See the company-knowledge guide.

Which AI is best if I care about privacy?

One with training off by default or by contract, short retention, readable memory, a DPA and residency options — and ideally fewer vendors overall. Our featured pick is Swiss-made MultipleChat AI (private workspaces; enterprise data isolation and EU/Swiss residency); local open-source models are the zero-cloud extreme.

Are temporary/incognito chats actually private?

They don't write memory, don't sit in your history and aren't used for training; providers may retain them briefly (e.g. up to 30 days) for abuse monitoring before purging. For intimate questions they're the right default.

Who do I complain to if a provider ignores my request?

EU: your national data protection authority. UK: the ICO. US: your state attorney general (California: CPPA). Complaints are free, and most providers resolve requests once a regulator is mentioned.

What should I do before deleting everything?

Export your data if you may need evidence, screenshot saved memories if you will file a formal request, then delete chats/files and turn off training. If you delete first, you may lose proof of what was stored.

Can I delete data about another person I mentioned?

You can delete the chat from your own account. If the other person is the data subject and wants formal erasure, they may need to file their own request or authorize you to act for them.

Do uploaded PDFs and images count?

Yes. Uploaded files, screenshots, voice transcripts and images can contain personal data and company secrets. Delete the file or conversation and include uploads explicitly in formal requests.

Is "archive chat" the same as delete?

No. Archive only hides or moves a conversation. Delete is the action that starts the provider's removal process.

What if I used Sign in with Google or Apple?

List the email and login method in the request. Providers often need the exact account identifier to match your data.

How often should I audit AI privacy settings?

Quarterly is sensible for heavy users. Also re-check after major product launches, new memory features, new workplace connectors or provider policy updates.
